Roosevelt Center Apartments Break Ground in Elkhart

GOSHEN, Ind. – Ancon Construction and LaCasa, Inc. broke ground Feb. 8 on the Roosevelt Center project in Elkhart, which will convert the former Roosevelt Elementary School into a 35-apartment building. Projected for completion this November, the apartments in the three-story building erected in 1923 will have one to three bedrooms and will be maintained long-term by LaCasa. There will also be space available for community agencies. Three local groups already rent space there; those areas will have updated heating, cooling and electrical systems and some new carpeting. About 100 people attended an evening dinner celebration following the morning groundbreaking ceremony.
“This neighborhood has a history in our community, and we’re happy to help LaCasa put some life back into it,” said Ancon president Bill Hunt. “This facility will bring more families to this neck of the woods and make the neighborhood stronger. Our experience with renovations will help us create quality home living for those families.”
The fight to keep the former school has been a long one, spearheaded by the Elkhart Housing Partnership and the Historic Roosevelt Center Association two years ago and supported by Elkhart city officials and residents. LaCasa took ownership of the building last December and mobilized to rehabilitate it into something the people of the community could use. Grants, corporate donations and city funds have been procured to cover the project’s costs, projected at $4.2 million.
LaCasa is a local agency which provides programs for the community to help place people in homes, provide counseling on the home-buying process, assist in immigration paperwork, provide translation and other language services, and help revitalize the community in general.
