New Media Commons and Café Completed at IUSB by Ancon Construction

GOSHEN, Ind. – A new multi-use media area was recently completed at IUSB by Goshen-based Ancon Construction, designed by the university’s architecture department. The Dorene Dwyer Hammes Media Commons and Café, located on the first floor of the campus Schurz Library, consists of the Multimedia Production Studio, Digital AV Nook, Circulation Hub and café.
In the Multimedia Production Studio, a wide range of technology and software are available for students to create presentations. Amenities include sound-proofing, audio and video editing and recording, a green-screen system and arts and special effects systems. Instructional Media Services Staff are on hand to provide assistance.
The Digital AV Nook includes media viewing stations for both individuals and groups with Blu-Ray DVD and VHS combination players on 19-inch monitors. Patrons can view cable TV news or DVDs or listen to audio recordings. At the nearby Circulation Hub is a renovated circulation, reserves and interlibrary loan services area.
The café with coffee bar features both traditional tables and chairs and soft seating with plentiful outlets for students to plug in laptops and other electronic devices. A 55-inch LED television runs news programming while newspapers and magazines are supplied for perusal.
This is the latest of many projects by Ancon Construction for local learning institutions. The company has also worked on educational, athletic and recreational facilities for schools such as Goshen College, Goshen Community Schools, Elkhart Baptist Christian School, Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation, South Bend School Corporation, St. Mary’s College, Montessori Academy at Edison Lakes and several others.
The media commons was paid for primarily by private donations, a majority of which came from Jerry and Dorene Hammes. A dedication was held Oct. 21 and the area is now open for full use to students and staff.
