Ancon Construction Completes Second Phase of Goshen College Apartments

Posted: 02/11/2008

GOSHEN, Ind. – Ancon Construction recently completed work on phase two of Goshen College’s new student housing developments. A four-story, 39,900-square-foot apartment building will accommodate 157 upperclassmen in 41 suites with two to four bedrooms, with an elevator for handicapped accessibility. Fourth-floor apartments feature design elements such as spiral staircases leading to loft living areas, and all units are hard-wired for Internet and cable connections.
In keeping with the college’s environmental preservation initiatives, Ancon worked to institute green building practices and materials throughout the project. Since the first section of the newest apartment building opened in 2005, it has proven to be the least expensive residence area to operate because of the energy-efficient construction materials Ancon provided. For example, an interface carpet made of cradle-to-cradle recycled material was chosen because it can be replaced in pieces when necessary instead of taking up the entire hallway. Plus, Ancon recycled much of the debris from the construction process, reduced the use of harmful glues, and maximized natural lighting with low-energy windows.
“We recognize the impact our work can have on both the environment and the people who use the buildings we create,” stated Bill Hunt, Ancon Construction president. “It’s important to us to make these buildings easy and low-cost for the college to maintain and operate, pleasant homes for the residents, and as nonintrusive on the natural environment around them as possible. We can make a difference by choosing how we build and what we build with.”
This addition comes after phase one, which added 25,000 square feet of living space and was completed in 2004. Altogether, it is the culmination of a six-year initiative to improve housing in order to accommodate a growing number of students living on campus. According to campus representatives, Goshen College had 447 students living on campus in fall of 2002, compared to 617 students living on campus in fall of 2007. With the addition of these new housing options, more juniors and seniors are expected to opt for on-campus living, which can now accommodate 830 students.
