Ground Breaking for Goodwill’s First Campus Location

Ground Breaking for Goodwill’s First Campus Location

June 27, 2018

Gary, IN-Ancon Construction, premier design build construction company, held a ground breaking ceremony to kick off the construction of Goodwill’s first campus project in the state of Indiana.

The ceremonial shovels that lifted dirt Monday in Gary for Goodwill Industries of Michiana’s $8 million charter school and Goodwill outlet store marked the organization’s first campus project in Indiana, said Debie M. Coble, its president and CEO.

Coble said her organization has been looking for land for about four years before it settled on eight acres at 4610 W. Ridge Road, just west of Clark Road. Barenie Lawn Decorations, 4800 W. Ridge Road, sold Goodwill the land, Coble said.

The 105,000 square-foot, one story building that will hold the Gary Excel Center charter school will serve adults, aged 18-and-over, who dropped out of school. There will also be a Kids Excel preschool program for children of adult students.

Ancon Construction, of Goshen, has been retained to build the campus, Coble said.

Goodwill operates 11 Excel Centers in Indiana. It opened a charter school in Hammond last year. The Indiana State Charter School Board sponsored the charter.  Graduates will be required to gain a certification in an in-demand employment field to improve their chances of getting a job, Coble said.  Funding for dropout recovery schools is routed from the state’s Workforce Development Department to the Department of Education, Coble said. It does not come from the same funding stream that finances K-12 schools, she said.  Gary School Board member Robert Buggs, who’s a Goodwill advisory board member, said the school will help veterans, ex-offenders, and others who need a high school diploma.

“What I appreciate is the vision this represents,” said Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson. “We know the value of the store, but more importantly, the Excel program will help our citizens who have dropped out.”

In partnership with Gary, Goodwill is also involved in the Gary for Life initiative aimed at reducing violence and the Nurse-Family Partnership that pairs registered nurses with more than 180 low-income new mothers.

Ancon Construction Opens New Office in Downtown South Bend

Ancon Construction Opens New Office in Downtown South Bend

February 15, 2018

South Bend, IN- Ancon Construction, premier design build construction firm, held a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open their new downtown South Bend office.  Located inside the newly renovated mixed use building The LaSalle the office has premiere corner street level visibility set inside the historic LaSalle building.  Although the office is inside a historic building the design is ultra modern and minimalistic.  Matt VanSoest, Designer, researched office spaces like Tesla and Google and used that for design inspiration.  Local artists have donated some sculptures and historic photos of downtown South Bend have placed them throughout the office.

Why downtown South Bend?  For over 40 years Ancon Construction has served South Bend, Mishawaka and the entire St. Joseph County region.  Nearly everyday there is an Ancon Construction employee in the region working on projects.  “We have a known presence and excellent reputation in this region….now we have the physical location to match.  The revitalization of the downtown corridor is exciting.  Many of the projects that started the downtown revitalization Ancon Construction were a part of, so South Bend seemed like the natural choice when we looked at potential locations.” noted Ryan Kring, Vice President of Business Development.

Kring went on to say, “This space is a communal area which our employees can use to give our clients a comfortable place to meet and have a great experience.  Having this space allows our customers a closer place to meet and plan out our projects together.  We use a team approach to project design and delivery in which our clients are involved heavily throughout the entire process.  The office is designed to be a living showroom of various types of materials so our clients can see them in actual space.  Periodically we will change out the furniture and flooring to highlight the latest available designs and materials.”

Ancon Construction is not the only tenant in the building, recently The Hideaway opened.  The Hideaway is a 1920’s speakeasy steampunk whiskey bar that was designed and built by Ancon Construction.  South Blend, a new coffee house, is also under construction and will be opening its doors in the next few months.

We have been building this region for over 40 years and we look forward to the next 40.
